[Frankenswitch] Creamsicles
Housing: Tangerine
Spring: 67g (Tangerine)
Stem: NK Cream Pom stem
Lube: G-Lube (glorious)
So I got the lube I ordered from Glorious this week, and decided to try it out, and might as well try out the creamsicles while I’m at it right?
Reading a lot on reddit about switch mods, specifically the creamsicle switch, the overall opinion is that it affects the sound a little better. After modding my switches, I basically only noticed that there’s less of the high pitched plastic sound. However that can be mostly attributed to how I lubed the switches. I put a thin layer all over the bottom housing, then a thicker layer on the stem and legs. Finally I lubed the top housings to reduce the sound on the upstroke of the keys. Honestly I think I put more lube than was necessary to achieve the sound I wanted. Smoothness is only slightly better than stock Tangerines, but the sound is a lot more more muted, and very slightly deeper. I don’t think swapping the stem had as much of an affect as just lubing the switches. Also the sound between rows on my keyboard is not uniform because of plate standoffs (there is a clear difference between the keys closer to the standoffs, and the ones in the middle of the board). So, basically I can’t definitively say that there’s a better sound due to the stem swap. Conclusion: I think lubed NK Creams are still deeper sounding (can’t say for sure since mine are on an aluminum tray mount and the one I’m testing creamsicles on is polycarbonate gasket mount). But lubing the Tangerine housing is definitely an improvement over stock.
Where I was a little disappointed in the sound of creamsicles, they surprised me in typing feel. The bottom out of the keys is much stiffer due to the cream stems being slightly longer. Bottoming out is definitely more satisfying, but the travel distance is less. When testing switches individually, it’s noticeable however when I’m typing I can’t really tell.
tl;dr:
Stem swapping has very very small effect on the sound of the keys, however bottoming out feels much better (less mushy)
Lubing has a larger effect on the sound, especially since my goal is to dampen it for a deeper *thocc* vs the stock *clack*.
