Week 48 + Thanksgiving (49)

For the last two weeks, work has been pretty chaotic. Not too busy, just unorganized and stuff. At the start of the week I was planning to just work on my proof of concept (poc) for a new development workflow. The goal being that it would allow us to slowly transfer our language stack from java to javascript. So that was really annoying, since I actually want to use typescript and not javascript, and webpack and tsc are both really confusing. I guess someone who was actually a frontend dev would understand it more, but I’ve only done code changes on existing projects so it was a learning experience. However, like I said, the last two weeks were pretty chaotic. We were preparing to launch multiple new features and since I had the least important tasks (no timeline for the poc being required) I was basically tasked with the final launch plan. The first feature was pretty small, but it was dependent on other teams, and they basically found a breaking bug the night before launch was supposed to happen. So that feature ended up being delayed until further notice (once they fix the bug (date TBA)).

The second feature was entirely our team, and we launched that at the beginning of the week! And from preliminary testing during our launch procedure, there seems to be nothing of note going wrong. I guess one annoying part of the process is that a majority of the teams we are working with are based on the west coast, while my team is on the east coast. Caused a little bit of a problem since they were all still sleeping when we were launching, and they basically needed to sign off on it. They were like “let’s do this during business hours.” And I was like “it’s 10am…” So I just paged them to get back online… :|

Anyways launch seemed to go smoothly and then finally got back to my poc work. And after days of struggling (I couldn’t find any good documentation of anyone else attempting the same thing/any time I found someone in the same situation, they didn’t have a working solution) I finally got it working! And then I closed my laptop for Thanksgiving Break.

Since it’s Thanksgiving, this year I am thankful for:

  1. health. My family is all still healthy, and Jesse/Joy were able to get here safely

  2. Jameson. My nephew. He’s so cute. Sometimes when I’m not in a great mood it cheered me up to see him. He’s so curious about everything, and not jaded. Although he is getting pretty heavy, holding him for extended amounts of time was really tiring.

  3. Friends. I’ve made a couple new friends this year despite covid. I guess having somewhat of a social life is nice. Also thankful for all the friends that reach out to me to talk & play games, even though I don’t really reach out to anyone else.

  4. You. I guess it’s a little shallow, but seeing reactions on my blog posts on facebook is pretty nice. It reminds me that people care about me, and are willing to keep up with my life. Also it helps encourage me to keep doing this when I do remember.
